“How did Coy do it?” June asked Bellamy as they sat together at the dining room table of the Ranch House. Bellamy had produced cake mere minutes after June walked in, and it was perfect—decadent, rich chocolate that made June care about little else besides how good it tasted. “How did he see through the motives or understand who was genuine?”

Bellamy laughed. “Oh, he didn’t, sweetie. I did.” June raised her eyebrows in question to that assertion. “Coy came to me for advice from day one.”

June twirled her fork in the frosting and then licked it off before saying, “And what would you have told me about Josh?”

Bellamy hesitated. “I would have asked why you picked him.”

“He was smart and well-spoken, but also had an endearing quietness to him too. He dressed well, and I can’t overlook that. When Josh talked about Little River and the area, he gushed about the beauty, and I knew he appreciated passion. I’ve seen very little of that since I got here.”

“He’s one of the most private people I know,” Bellamy said. “He doesn’t have any social media accounts and the weekly basketball game is the only time I’ve ever seen him with other people.”

June speared another bite of cake. “I didn’t think to call any of the references. Josh had Cody Bishop on his application as a personal reference, and I’ve done business with him. But I didn’t even think to call to ask him about Josh. Just his name said enough to me. As a businesswoman, I should’ve known better.”

“There’s nothing wrong with letting your heart do the leading every once in a while. It brought you here to Little River, and you might not have found what you expected . . . but then again, you might have.” Bellamy’s eyes twinkled and June couldn’t help laughing at the insinuation.

“Word gets around in small towns, doesn’t it?”

Bellamy joined in the laughter. “For a guy who ignores his fair share of gossip, Nash sure passes it along when it’s something good. And besides, everyone saw you leave church with Wyatt.”

June found herself blushing at the possibility of Wyatt saying something to his friend about June. When Josh had accused Wyatt of thinking the whole thing was stupid, June had already known Wyatt hadn’t submitted an application. She’d gone back through them the night she brought him home from the hospital. She couldn’t have slept anyway, so it had given her something to do. Her ego had been pricked, but yeah, Lucas would’ve thought this was crazy too. His dang voice in her head kept harping on her about settling for someone. She didn’t blame Wyatt for not believing in this idea.

She let loose a small smile. “At first I thought my urge to take care of him had something to do with him knowing Lucas and how I took care of Lucas and all of that—but I’ve wondered if there’s something pushing us together. Like the magic of this town or something.”

“You sound like Mrs.
